General Plea to a Girlfriend; Arab Strap

The debut album of the Scottish band Arab Strap (MySpace) called "The Week Never Starts Round Here" from 1996 released one song that features whistlings.

In an interview with Stereokill, the multi-instrumentalist Malcolm Middleton, who created the band with the vocalist Aidan Moffat, answered:

Stereokill: You’ve recorded many albums over the course of your career. Which would you say you’re most proud of?

Middleton: Probaby the first Arab Strap album, The Week Never Starts Round Here. It’s completely undiluted and free from any self-expectations which we later developed.

In the band's website we can read that "the album was a bleak and dark affair focussing on the pain and turmoil of a failed relationship, rubbish jobs with worse wages and a love for Kate Moss - all set to the most brooding music. The melancholy and sadness of the music, coupled with their sometimes majestic, sometimes ramshackle live shows led to more than one comparison with Joy Division."

Reviewing the album, Pitchfork analyses the whistling song with the following words: "'General Plea to a Girlfriend' is abrasively lo-fi, and a few of the songs are a bit shapeless, but the duo's basic sound is well-established, with Middleton's guitar and drum machines laying out rough, urban landscapes for Moffat to wander through."

I can't make boasts about my body.
The workmanship is somewhat shoddy.
Sometimes I overwork my gob.
Can't buy you gifts, I've got no job.

I know you find my habits sickly.
I know sometimes I cum too quickly.
I don't mind jokes like "two-stoke wonder".
Just don't slash my trust asunder.

The Big Bang; Rock Mafia

RockMafia thinks of itself as a complete production house in the entertainment business which means that they are capable of much more than just making music! About itself, RockMafia also said in its weblog that "the future of RockMafia is all about the music, baby."

According to Wikipedia, Rock Mafia is consisted of Tim James and Antonina Armato. The team has worked and produced for several pop artists since its arising, namely Selena Gomez, The Beach Girl5, Demi Lovato, Vanessa Hudgens, Miley Cyrus and many others.

Speaking of Miley, "The Big Bang"'s music video features her and Kevin Zegers. "The Big Bang" is the first single from Rock Mafia, and both the video and the song are available exclusively online.¹

Cyrus said in an interview with Just Jared about the relationship between her and the group: “Rock Mafia is my family and there’s nothing that means more than creating with them. The video is unique and honestly, was a life changing experience. This song means a lot to me.”

Here it is Rock Mafia's MySpace and YouTube channel. Download.

Oh, baby!
I don't wanna lie,
I'm gonna take what you're giving
'cause I know you're willing,
To take me all the way, you got me right here.
Combustible. and I can't wait to finally explode.

The big big bang, the reason I'm alive,
When all the stars collide, in this universe inside.
The big big bang!
The big big bang!
The big big bang!

Some people like to talk. but I'm into doing,
What I feel like doing, when I'm inspired.
So, if we take a walk down, the beach tonight,
I bet we could light up the sky.

The big big bang, the reason I'm alive,
When all the stars collide, in this universe inside.
The big big bang!
The big big bang!
The big big bang!

Take it from me, I don't wanna be, mummified,
Sometimes I feel so isolated,
I wanna die. and now take it from me, if you got it.
Every time, so baby,
Bring your body here, next to mine.
Next to mine!
I don't wanna dream!
I just wanna live!
So baby, not lets miss this thing!

The big big bang, the reason I'm alive,
When all the stars collide, in this universe inside.
The big big bang!
The big big bang!
The big big bang!

Hite me, big big big bang.
Oh, baby!
Oh, baby!
Oh, baby!

Pretty Women; Sweeney Todd and Judge Tupin

Hello!

How boring is your weekend?

Pff... it doesn't matter, it will never be as boring as the Sweeney Todd's with Mrs. Lovett. Johnny Depp's interpretation of the demon barber shows an unsatisfied and angrily restrained man who only wants his bloody revenge. It is impressive the ability of this actor to capture the true psyche of his characters. By the way, I once heard that Depp's characters are always gay. I wonder what kind of gay should be Mr. T... The stern homofobic or the crazy bad bitch?

Anyways, before posting the Tim Burton's version I made a quick research and found out that this song is originally whistled in its first version. The first performance of this stage play (played on Broadway) is from 1979; it was directed by Harold Prince (who also conducted The Phantom of Opera and Cabaret) and "starred Len Cariou as Sweeney Todd and Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett."¹ The music and lyrics was composed by Stephen Sondheim and all of this was based on the Victorian tale written by the British playwriter Christopher Bond.

Here is the "Pretty Women" 1979 Broadway cast recording sung by Len Cariou and Edmund Lyndeck (as Judge Tupin):

Tim Burton's 2007 movie has the whistling done by Johnny Depp who sings along with his archrival played by Alan "Severus Snape" Rickman. :)
Sweeney Todd
What can I do for you today sir? Stylish trimming of the hair? Soothing skin massage. Sit sir. Sit.

Judge Turpin
You see sir a man infatued with love. Her ardent amd eager slave. So fetch the pomade and pumice stone
and lend me a more seductive tone
a sprinkling perhaps of French cologne but first sir I think a shave.

Sweeney Todd
The closest I ever gave
*whistles*

Judge Turpin
In a merry mood today Mr. Todd?

Sweeney Todd
Tis your delight sir catching fire from one man to the next.

Judge Turpin
Tis true sir love can still inspire the blood to pound, the heart leap higher. What more

Sweeney Todd
What more?

Judge Turpin and Sweeney Todd
Can man require

Judge Turpin
Than love sir

Sweeney Todd
More than love sir

Judge Turpin
What sir?

Sweeney Todd
Women

Judge Turpin
Ah yes women

Sweeney Todd
Pretty women
Now then my friend.
Now to your purpose.
Patience. Enjoy it.
Revenge can't be taken in haste.

Judge Turpin
Make haste and in this work you'll be commended sir

Sweeney Todd
My lord!
And who may it be said is your intended sir?

Judge Turpin
My ward
Pretty as a rose bud

Sweeney Todd
Pretty as her mother?

Judge Turpin
Huh? What was that?

Sweeney Todd (spoken)
Nothing sir. Nothing.
(sung)
Pretty women
Fascinating...
Sipping coffee,
Dancing...
Pretty women
Are a wonder.
Pretty women!

Sitting in the window or
Standing on the stair
Something in them chills the air.
Pretty women

Judge Turpin
Silhouetted...

Sweeney Todd
Stay within you,

Judge Turpin
Glancing...

Sweeney Todd
stay forever,

Judge Turpin
Breathing lightly...

Sweeney Todd
Pretty women,

Judge Turpin and Sweeney Todd (together and alternating)
Pretty women!

Blowing out their candles or
Combing out their hair,
Combing out their hair then they leave
Even when they leave you and vainish they somehow can still can remain there with you
Even when they leave
They still are there.
They're there
Ah! Pretty women,

Sweeney Todd
At their mirrors,

Judge Turpin
In their gardens,

Sweeney Todd
Letter-writing,

Judge Turpin
Flower-picking,

Sweeney Todd
Weather-watching.

Sweeney Todd and Judge Turpin
How they make a man sing!
Proof of heaven as you're living,
Pretty women! Sir, pretty women!
Yes pretty women,
Pretty women,
Pretty women,
Pretty women.

Pequeño Vals; Marlango

How lovely is French music? The loveliest! There is so much passion in the voice of French singers and the piano is so luxuriously strong... I mean, the cabaret 20s style and the great diva's like Piaf, Hardy, Mathieu, etc.

Now imagine a cabaret/jazz/David Lynch¹ inspired trio from Madrid, Spain. The result is Marlango. As could only be, this band is led by a woman: her name is Leonor Watling. Watling's partners are Alejandro Pelayo (au piano) and Oscar Ybarra (au trompette).

The first thing that catch our attention is the name of the band. The explanation about it is as charming as creative. It was taken from Tom Waits' (who are one of Marlango's inspiration) intro for "I Wish I Was in New Orleans".

"I used to know this girl named Suzie Marlango. And her brother's band name was Joe Marlango. Joe always wanted to kill me. He sang in a bandcalled the Rodbenders. Suzie Marlango used to wear these angora sweaters. I'm crazy about angora sweaters... I guess It's kind of a hang-up of mine. She had angora socks, and angora shoes. I believe she was originally from Angora. I don't know where she is anymore, but every time I see an angora sweater, I think maybe inside will be Susie Marlango. He-he-he... Maybe she's in New Orleans. Well, I'll be there..."

Marlango released four studio albums. The second one, "Automatic Perfection" has our whistling song of today. Look, there is an interview with then in YouTube where they talk about this album, so if you want to watch it, here it goes.

Now... why does the song call "Pequeño Vals"? Why are there whistlings in it? Who does whistle? The answers to these questions belong to the unkown. :(

Download.

Would you mind if I just sit down here
And watch you dance that waltz?
It brings faith just to see
What two people can be
With a pattern
And a glass of bubbles

You go round and round and round
Round and round

Who can tell if the colors I see
Are the same for you and me?
Who can tell if scent that I smell
Is the same for both of us?

Would you mind if I just sit down here
And watch you dance that waltz?
It gives faith just to see
What two people can be
With a pattern
And a glass of bubbles

You go round and round and round
Round and round

Your steps drawn the milkyway
I see stars glowing in your footsteps

Would you mind if I just sit down here
And watch you dance that waltz?
It gives faith just to see
What two people can be
With a pattern
And a glass of bubbles

You go round and round and round
And a round building a milkyway for me

Streamline; Newton

Newton is a Spanish band, famous for their song Streamline. It was composed of the members J.J. Verdu, José Vicente Molla and temporarily Juan Carlos Pla. Their style was Mákina, an electronic music style very famous in Spain during the 90s. The band also made music under pseudonyms, such as Carlton, Crazy Heaven, Edison or Omega.

I'll put below a Pepsi Cola advertising video instead of the tradicional music video because there's not music video. ^^

Taxímetro; Oswaldo Montenegro

Oswaldo Montenegro is a Brazilian singer and songwriter born in 1956 in Rio de Janeiro. Montenegro music style is wildly MPB, with some folk and rock in it. He is much proficient as an artist, although being very underrated.

Oswaldo Montenegro's whistling song was released in his eponymous 1990 studio album. According to his website, the song "Taxímetro" came to life because of a theatrical performance called "Os Menestréis that he was making. The song became a great success.

Eu tava andando na rua,
chovia e tava calor.
Como um taxímetro o olhar registrava
e me cobrava tudo o que já passou.
E você me odeie e eu entendo
e Deus passou lotado por nós.
Não, não esqueça que a cabeça abandonou minha voz.

A gente andou pela Lua,
mas nunca andou de metrô.
Eu só estranhava quando te via nua
e preferia de vestido bordô.
E você me odeie e eu entendo
e Deus passou lotado por nós.
Não, não esqueça que a cabeça abandonou minha voz.

Your heart is broken
And you don't seem to mind
I guess it happened
A little too many times, too many times

You tried and you've got tired
Those long half-written stories
You held a fire
Right under the snow

They don't, they don't
How could they really know, they don't
They don't how it really feels
They're just here on holidays
Like dummies filling landscapes
How could they see you cry

Do you remember me
I was the one that held you through
I held the spotlight when you did that crazy dance
I danced with you, I felt like superstars do
Me and you
We're just like superstars

I was around you
You couldn't really tell
I held you close while
While you drove you just drove into hell, you know

A kind of hurt that binds
A light that loves you blind
And while your feet go
They go deeper in the sand
You wait and drown
You're waving to the crowd, that sits

But they don't know how it really feels
They're just here on holidays
Like dummies filling landscapes
How could they see you cry

Do you remember me
I was the one that held you through
I held the spotlight when you did that crazy dance for me

Yeah you did that crazy dance
You did that crazy dance for me

Did that crazy dance, did that crazy dance...

'Cause they don't know how it really feels
They're just here on holidays
Like dummies filling landscapes
How could they see us cry

Now do you remember me
I was the one that held you through
I held the spotlight when you did that crazy dance for me
As I danced with you, I felt like superstars do
Me and you
We're just like superstars

Danced with you, just like superstars do
Me and you
Just like superstars

Sunday with a Flu; Yodelice

There is a coincidence and a finding of lazyness in the post today.

The latter because I discovered a few hours ago one Facebook's page that reunites songs with whistling too (of course the amount of songs on my blog is unachievable!). But I realized that I should be the one keeping that page. Well... Lazyness 1 x 0 me.

"Sunday With a Flu" was on the top of this page, and because I didn't know it, I quickly clicked to listen to it and decided to post it today. Then I saw the coincidence.

"Sunday With a Flu" was composed and is played by a French musician called Maxim Nucci, best known by his alter ego named Yodelice. Nucci created this melancholic persona in a visit to USA. Returning to Europe, he wrote some of his songs in a folk/ethnic style.¹

This song was released in Yodelice's 2009 album called "Tree of Life". According to Last.FM, it is his most famous song.

The coincidence? My little sister got the flu this weekend.

Closed my door, forgot my key
Missed my bus in the pouring rain
It's been the usual sunday with a flu
And I just can't get over you

Burnt my toast and lost your number
Cut my finger, spilled my beer
It's been the usual sunday with a flu
And I just can't get over you

I put your stockings in my purple boots
What if I don't get over you?

Had a chat and left my hat
Ate my dog and walked my cat
It's been the usual sunday with a flu
And I just can't get over you

I put your stockings in my purple boots
What if I don't get over you?

I put your stockings in my purple boots
What if I don't get over you?

Called a cabbage threw the garbage
Asked for help and got some kelp
It's been the usual sunday with a flu
And I just can't get over you

I put your stockings in my purple boots
What if I don't get over you?

Flashbax; Oasis

Today morning was so Oasis...

One friend told me that there is a B-Side song with whistling. The song is called Flashbax, it was released in the 1998 single "All Around the World", it was sung by Noel and all of this I took from Wikipedia.

I spend my time sittin' on
the fence with a mate of mine
I'm tryin to write the line of the story
we believe that everything said is a waste of time
cos life is well tried and it bores me
yeah, yeah, yeah

in my well paid opinion
these things they really don't matter
cos from my crystal gaze tonight
there shines a light
like dynamite

sittin' on a throne will give a bad back to you
livin' on my own was like a flashback
to the days when I was lost and lonely
say what I said was just a different story
all your lies well they still bore me
there's nothin wrong with my world
these things they really don't matter now

i spend my time sittin' on the fence
with a mate of mine
i'm tryin to write the line of the story
we believe that everything said is a waste of time
cos life is well tried and it bores me
yeah, yeah, yeah

in my well paid opinion
these things they really don't matter
cos from my crystal gaze tonight
there shines a light
like dynamite

sittin' on a throne will give a bad back to you
livin' on my own was like a flashback
to the days when I was lost and lonely
say what I said was just a different story
all those lies meant they still bore me
there's nothin wrong in my world
these things they really don't matter
these things they really don't matter now

sittin' on a phone will give a bad back to you
livin' on my own was like a flashback
to the days when I was lost and lonely
say what I said was just a different story
all your lies man they still bore me
there's nothin' wrong in my world
and these things they really don't matter
these things they really don't matter now

don't matter now
don't matter now
don't matter now
they don't matter now
they don't matter now
they don't matter now
they don't matter now
don't matter now
don't matter now

You're Tender and You're Tired; Manic Street Preachers

Welcome Wales to my blog!

The first Welsh band to appear here is Manic Street Preachers, an alternative/hard rock band formed in 1986. They are James Dean Bradfield (vocals, guitars), Nicky Wire (bass, occasional vocals) and Sean Moore (drums, backing vocals, occasional trumpet).

Here they are!
Manic's whistling song was released in the 1998 album called "This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours". According to Wikipedia "the title is a quotation taken from a speech given by Welsh British Labour Party politician Aneurin Bevan."

What more? You tell me. :/

You're so fragile tonight
Been up hurting all night
It's not trivial like they think
Yes you're desperate and hurt
Thought about it so many times
Too afraid to open your eyes
To see the sadness that's inside
Just sit back in and stop time

You're tender and you're tired
You can't be bothered to decide
Whether you live or die
Or just forget about your life

But it's too late to be real
No time to be strong enough
Just time to leave it all behind
Memory has become pain
Rebuild the void with flowers
Sad eye destruction built around sand and sea
Yes you can build yourself around
Build yourself around me

You're tender and you're tired
You can't be bothered to decide
Whether you live or doe
Or just forget about your life

Drift away and die
Never say goodbye
Drift away and die

Bad Acid... Jazz; Beaverloop

Beaverloop started in Perth on march 8, 1993 and broke up on Jan 20, 2000.

Beaverloop started when Loon-x-Wing, Bradc, and Simon Kennedy (Ganesha on ECOPAX) got together one March afternoon at The Rechabite Hall and jammed out a few 20 minute songs. Over the next few months these jams formed into songs and got shorter until they eventually turned into a weird hybrid of punk/rap/metal/reggae and rock.

Following there is an impression from a guy who watched Beaverloop's performance (taken from Cifras.com):

"Late last year, Beaverloop won an ABC Recovery competition for best band and were given the prize of playing at some festival and also doing a live set for Recovery. They are one of the biggest bands in Perth at the moment, and their live set at the Mudslinger Festival was awesome. One of the funniest things I've ever seen was at Mudslinger when Loon X-Win (bass, vocals) pronounced 'I'm hot' and then played a whole set naked!"

Thay all call me mellow yellow!
Thats 'cause i'm a mellow fellow!

Summer's Here; Frenzal Rhomb

Frenzal Rhomb is an Australian punk rock band. Them for themselves on Frenzal's MySpace:

If youre still reading on, you must want some history. Heres an edited version of all the biographical info you might find on wikipedia if you had an internet connection and didnt have to rely on this medieval gestetnered old bio:

1994s Dick Sandwich and 1995's Coughing Up a Storm set the stage for a lifetime of poor production standards and great songs, the likes of which Australian and international audiences lapped up! Fat Mike, owner of Fat Wreck Chords and member of NOFX, got his hands on a copy of CUAS when NOFX toured with Frenzal in 1996. Impressed with what he heard, he asked the band if they wanted to release something on his label. Frenzal accepted this invitation, releasing the 4 Litres EP. Fat Mike then forgot about them and the band attempted to negotiate a deal with a heroin addicted label mogul in the US, who never got around to signing a deal because he was in Mexico having his blood supply exchanged. Nevertheless, Frenzal Rhombs second album Not So Tough Now blew things up in Australia. Meet The Family was released in 1997 - their first album to come out in the US, and their first album with new guitarist Lindsay McDougall after original guitarist Ben Costello left to become a full time animal rights activist and second hand computer salesman. Meet the Family was certified gold in Australia, beginning a long line in awards, banners and trophies collected and stolen by the band.

The LP A Man's Not A Camel was released in Australia in March 1999 and on Fat Wreck Chords for the rest of the world. US and European tours followed with the likes of Blink 182, Less Than Jake, Vans Warped, and Toto.
Jason Whalley and Lindsay McDougall also work on radio presenting Triple J's breakfast show daily from some god awful time of the morning until around about everyone elses wake up time. Gordy makes picture frames out of bits of scrap wood, broken glass and his own saliva; and Tom sails the high seas of Adelaide on his Yacht. This is why Frenzal Rhomb never tour.

---

Frenzal's whistling song is in the 1999 album called "A Man is Not a Camel".

Tim and Candy getting sandy
down at the beach but he's a leach
He's all bleached blonde white teeth, nothing wrong
she's got a brain
it's causing her pain

John's with Kim but she likes Tim
she only wants sex but she's with his ex
She wants more, thinks life is a bore the shore's not enough
the guys are too tough

Summer's here the rain has gone away
Summer's here all thinking's gone 'til May

Tim and John swear nothing's going on
It's a god given right on a Saturday night
Two drinks later John becomes a traitor
it's always the same everybody's fair game

Summer's here put the top down and drive
Summer's here now we're being burnt alive

Bleached bland, polluted sand, there's nowhere to go, dull eyes so low
Tim, John, Candy, Kim, let's not pretend, that's it for them
If you dig a little deeper, an hour, 4-litres, the truth does reveal
we cannot conceal
It's written plain and plenty, a face full of envy in all of our
thoughts and all of our hearts

Summer, discontent
Summer's here put the top down and drive
Summer's here now we're being burnt alive
Summer's here and we're almost naked
Our tan is deep but no-one knows we've faked it

Hudožest Venyj; Devyat

I'm glad I could find another Russian song with whistling. Today I'm going to post about the band Devyat. Because I could not find “non-cyrilic” informations about Devyat, I send an e-mail to its members and they responded!

According to them Devyat means “nine” and it “is a non-commercial project. There are four people in the band playing two guitars, bass and drums. The frontsman's name is Choy (vocals and guitar). The Devyat is from Moscow, Russia. And we mostly give concerts here. The band was formed in 1999.

About their music style they explained: “We play rock. (Actually, we say 'rock', because it's the most familiar word to explain what it'is hard to explain. I'd rather say we play cabaret rock or smart rock or art rock or whatever rock. Though it still isn't completely true. We recorded an electronic album in 2001 and we play unplugged concerts as well.)

The song “Hudožest Venyj” (“Художественный свист”  which means “Artistic Whistle”) was “written in 2005 and recorded in 2007 for our fourth album 'Ubey v sebe Evgrafa' ('Убей в себе Евграфа' which means 'Kill Evgraf in your mind'). It's a lovesong. In this song a guy is trying to draw a girl's attention while they are on the train. But she doesn't show any interest in him. Instead, she is looking out of the window at the street lamps and cable wires. The wind whistles in wires.

Finally, the most important part: “All the Devyat members whistle in the microphone at the end of the song.

Thank you very much, Devyat!

Pidatka seena tasta ilmasta,
Что в переводе не очень красиво.
Но я не ропщу.
Только немного грущу.
А ты — вся в проводах,
ТЫ ВСЯ В ПРОВОДАХ
И в ветре, который по проводам
Так упоительно свищет.

Polyushko Polye; Red Army Choir

A few days ago was one of the greatest holidays in Russia: it was the Victory Day. We can read about it on its Wikipedia page:

May 9th, Russia celebrates the victory over Nazi Germany, while remembering those who died in order to achieve it. On 9 May 1945 (by Moscow time) the German military surrendered to the Soviet Union and the Allies of World War II in Berlin (Karlshorst). A military parade is held in Moscow to celebrate the day. Victory Day (День Победы Den Pobedy) is by far one of the biggest Russian holidays. It commemorates those who died in WWII and pays tribute to survivors and veterans. Flowers and wreaths are laid on wartime graves and special parties and concerts are organized for veterans. In the evening there is a firework display. A huge military parade, hosted by the President of the Russian Federation, is annually organized in Moscow on Red Square. Similar parades are organized in all major Russian cities.”

I found on the website Moscow Russia Insider's Guide the view of this holiday from a Russian:

Unlike other holidays, The Victory Day in Russia isn't just another day to rest at home. This day unites all Russians with a memory of heroic deed of our grandfathers. Thanks to them, we exist as a nation — and as human beings.

“And so, once a year, on 9th of May, we congratulate each other with this wonderful date. The entire country celebrates, parades are held, we listen to 'Den' Pobedy' — a great song about Victory. And veterans — they quietly sit together to remember how it was...

If you got interested read the whole article clicking right here.

Besides “Den' Pobedy”, another song which is sung in the Parade is Polyushko Polye” (Russian spelling: Полюшко Поле). Polye means “field” in Russian, “polyushko” is a diminutive/hypocoristic form for “polye. The same article from Wikipedia states that “the music was by Lev Knipper, with lyrics by Viktor Gusev. Knipper's song was part of the symphony with chorus (lyrics by Gusev) "A Poem about a Komsomol Soldier" (Поэма о бойце-комсомольце) composed in 1934. The original lyrics are sung from the perspective of a Red Army recruit, who proudly leaves his home to keep watch against his homeland's enemies.”

This song is normally performed by the Red Army Choir and, as you can see watching the video below, a mustached old man whistles along the song.
Have a good holiday!

All Is Love; Karen O and the Kids

Talking about movies...

"All Is Love" is a song written by Karen O and Nick Zinner for the 2009 film Where the Wild Things Are. The song was recorded by Karen O and the Kids, a group consisting of O, Zinner, and several other prominent indie rock musicians, and released as the lead single from the film's soundtrack on August 25, 2009. The name "All is Love" is a play on the name of the Swedish band Love is All, whose song "Make Out Fall Out" inspired Karen O. The whimsical song contains shouting, whistling, and clapping and incorporates an untrained children's choir.

"All Is Love" was widely praised by critics and received nominations for the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Song and the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media, but did not win. Critics considered the song's failure to receive a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Song a "snub".¹
1, 2 ready, go!!
Grow some big feet, holes in history
Is where you'll find me, is where you'll find
All is Love, is love, is love, is love

L.O.V.E, it's a mystery
Where you'll find me, where you'll find
All is Love, is love, is love, is love

Ooh ooh ooh ooh...
All is Love

1, 2 ready, go!!
L.O.V.E, it's a mystery
Where you'll find me, where you'll find
All is Love, is love, is love, is lo
Ooh ooh ooh ooh...
L.O.V.E, it's a mystery
Where you'll find me, where you'll find
All is Love, is love, is love, is love...

Festival; Sigur Rós

Hi! This weekend I watched 127 Hours by the amazing director Danny Boyle.

[SPOILER]
The film is awesome! Danny Boyle established his filming style in a surprising manner. One of my best scenes was the one in the end when Aron Ralston (James Franco), without his right arm already, runs through the desert and finds a family who looks for help and the events will happening with a background triunfant music.

The song played in this scene is "Festival" by the Icelandic post-rock band called Sigur Rós.
[/SPOILER]

The whistling is far away in the end, nine minutes after the song begining. About "Festival" we can read on StereoGum.com that:

The song’s just over nine minutes and split evenly into two movements: the first is straight ( ) style, slowly unfolding, organ-laced celestial coos from Jonsi; the second comes at 4:35 with a very Takk-y “Hoppípolla”–>”Með blóðnasir” transition (see: downstroking bass, surrounding band swells), ending in what sounds like, yes, a festival. In other words: it’s a Sigur Rós song. In other other words: It’s good. I hear a few Hopelandic-y “yu-so”s in there, so my barely educated guess is that this is not the song that is meant to be in English."

Sjáum yfir rá

Við siglum mastri trú
Seglum þöndum
Við stýrum að í brú

Við siglum í land
Í stórgrýti og sand
Við vöðum í land
Fremdarástand
Já, anskotann

Feginn fann ég þar
Þökkum ákaflega
Í skjóli neyðarhúss
og við sváfum

Starstrukk; 3OH!3

3OH!3 (three-oh-three) is an American electronic pop duo but the song seems like rap, so I'll post it today. :P

3OH!3 is formed by Sean Foreman and Nathaniel 'Nat' Motte. The band was "named after the duo's area code in Boulder, Colorado." They started in 2004 and released three studio albums til today.

"Startrukk" is in 3OH!3's second album, 2008. According to Wikipedia, "it is their third single and their second single to be released from their second studio album, Want. A radio-only and the deluxe album version has been released featuring pop star Katy Perry."

The remix feat. Katy Perry picked #3 on UK Single Charts and #66 on Billboard Hot100.

Below the audio is the original from studio and the video is the remix with Katy Perry.
Nice legs, Daisy Dukes makes a man go
That's the way they all come through like
Low-cut, see-through shirts that make ya
That's the way she come through like

'Cause I just set them up
Just set them up
Just set them up
To knock them down
'Cause I just set them up
Just set them up
Just set them up
To knock them down

I think I should know...
How to make love to something innocent without leaving my fingerprints out
Now, L.O.V.E's just another word I'll never learn to pronounce
How do I say I'm sorry 'cause the word is never gonna come out
Now, L.O.V.E's just another word I'll never learn to pronounce

Tight jeans, double d's makin' me go
All the people on the street know
Iced out, lit-up make the kids go
All the people on the street know

'Cause I just set them up
Just set them up
Just set them up
To knock them down
'Cause I just set them up
Just set them up
Just set them up
To knock them down

I think I should know...
How to make love to something innocent without leaving my fingerprints out
Now, L.O.V.E's just another word I'll never learn to pronounce
How do I say I'm sorry 'cause the word is never gonna come out
Now, L.O.V.E's just another word I'll never learn to pronounce

Push it baby, push it baby, out of control
I got my gun cocked tighted and I'm ready to blow
Push it baby, push it baby, out of control
This is the same old dance that you already know
Push it baby, push it baby, out of control
I got my gun cocked tighted and I'm ready to blow
Push it baby, push it baby, out of control
This is the same old dance that you already know

I think I should know...
How to make love to something innocent without leaving my fingerprints out
Now, L.O.V.E's just another word I'll never learn to pronounce
How do I say I'm sorry 'cause the word is never gonna come out
Now, L.O.V.E's just another word I'll never learn to pronounce

Walking Away; Brother Ali

Brother Ali is a rapper who is annoyed by the constant questions about his genetic disorder called albinism¹ (he often makes fun of the media's constant urge to mention his condition in the first lines of their reviews or newspaper articles), so... :X

Because Ali's disorder he is also legally blind. But... what is legal blindness?

"According to the entry on blindness in the Yahoo! Health Encyclopedia, anyone with vision worse than 20/200 that cannot be improved with corrective lenses is considered legally blind. In addition, people with a visual field of less than 20 degrees diameter (10 degrees radius) are also considered legally blind. The American Optometric Association states that a person with 20/20 vision can clearly identify a row of 9mm letters from 20 feet. A legally blind person with vision of 20/200 has to be as close as 20 feet to identify objects that people with normal vision can spot from 200 feet. So a legally blind person needs a distance of two feet to spot the letters on a standard eye chart that is 20 feet away."

Another particularity about Brother Ali is that he is Muslim. Before his conversion to Islam his name was Jason Newman. And he explained to NPR Music how it happened:

"You know, a kid like me from the Midwest, who was so enthralled by the poetry and artistry of people like Rakim... It made me want to know, what's he talking about?" Brother Ali says.

"He said, 'All praise due to Allah' — that's a blessing. I wanted to know what that was," Brother Ali says. "And so when Chuck D and KRS-One were saying things like, 'Farrakhan's a prophet, I think you oughta listen to him,' that is initially what made me track down the Quran."

About "The Undisputed Truth" (the album with the song that features whistlings) he said in an interview with Pause Magazine:

P: So, your new album is called The Undisputed Truth, and last I heard, you were Muslim. So, my question to you is: what is truth?

BA: That’s not the meaning of it. I’m not saying that I’m telling you the ultimate, objective, absolute truth. I’m saying that I’m gonna give you the uncut truth the way I see it. I’m gonna show you myself, as I really am. I’m not gonna try and front, and make myself look cooler, or talk a lil bit smarter or a lil bit more righteous. I’m just gonna be who I am. So that’s what that means. Everything on there is really personal. Even songs where people say “oh, you’re making political songs now.” I mean, that’s kinda true, but even those are really personal. It’s the way I see it, and the way things make me feel as a man. So, that’s the meaning of that. It’s not that I have THE truth and I’m gonna tell it to you and you need to follow it. It’s like “I’m gonna be honest with you for a minute.” That’s what it means.

P: So, what is truth?
BA: Well, obviously I have things that I believe in. But that’s not the point, the point is “this is really me.” I’m being honest and open and transparent. The point is not to try to teach you, or convert you, or preach Islam, or even try to make you listen to old school hip hop or or try to make you what I like, or anything like that. It’s “this is how I am.”

In his website we can read that:

Brother Ali's last album, the critically acclaimed, The Undisputed Truth, was a landmark in hip-hop, an album that carried weight equally with critics and fans alike, an album of bold statements and bolder beats, politically and socially aware without being preachy.

"Walking Away" is about the breakdown of Brother Ali’s first marriage (here).

Go ahead and wager that you never listen to another song of mine. (haha)
I can't say I blame you either 'cause if you made records, you ain't gunna catch me listening to that shit.
But if you do, I just want you to know I didn't make this to hurt you.
Lord knows you done hurt enough.
Just, I don't know, try to make some real shit, you know?

Bye, you ain't never gunna see me again if I can help it, little felon, take it easy,
Fresh out of force tears, kisses, and hugs,
You about to lose the company your misery loves,
I ain't never did nothing but try to cure your disease,
Atleast help the symptoms, instead you infected me,
I'm not the kind of man to draw a line in the sand,
If you gotta draw at all then it's time for you to scram,
P.S., you can keep all this shit,
and hang around your broke friends and call yourself rich,
The stugglin' I did with you was all for nothin',
It was never enough, your heart set on sufferin',
I admit that I was weak in the beginnin',
I wanted someone to need me instead of a friendship,
I didn't think I deserved a true partner,
So I transferred the arrangement I had with my mama,

Since you never listened to a word I ever said,
Maybe seeing this door slam will get it through your head.
I don't love you, I don't think I ever did,
And if you hadn't tried to kill me I'da stayed for the kid.

There's nothing more for us to say,
Got my mind made up, i'm walking away,
Sometimes we just outgrow the road that we play,
Hope you find a happy ending to your story someday.

Round and round and round we used to go,
I never fucked you right, I made enough bread, I know,
If i'm such a bastard and mistreated you so,
Then how's it your losing your mind to see me go?
Truth be told, I held you together,
For all them years, and I cheated on you never,
Defended your honor, took in your mama when she tried to rehab and had to back through the drama,
You got a sick stone under your ribs, where a heart is supposed to live,
Sick, twisted, and vindictive, with your windows dim,
Baby you're not wicked hard bull fish, you must shiver,
How you threaten to kill the most precious, gift that you'll ever be blessed with?
And that shits twisted, demented, and depressed as shit,
And alone because you faithfully slayed your friendships,

Since you never listened to a word I ever said,
Maybe seeing this door slam will get it through your head.
You don't love me, I don't think you ever did,
And if you hadn't tried to kill me I'da stayed for the kid.

There's nothing more for us to say,
Got my mind made up, i'm walking away,
Sometimes we just outgrow the road that we play,
Hope you find a happy ending to your story someday.

Pickets in the city when we in around town
Next door neighbors tellin us, that is too loud
"Now neighbor, can you please just turn that mess down?"
This is the sound of throwin pennies on the ground

Turn it up, I don't think they hear it enough
Back when Jordans' and a gold chain was livin it up
Up top, I had a hi-top fade wit the high-tops
Watchin my highlight tapes from a skybox
Auburn Hills, Michigan - home of the palace
The place on the map where Isaiah beat Magic
Throwin elbows, had them rip my horn habits
with the 8-9 bad boy hammer on my cap
and you know Chuck wit it, now the girls get wit it
Tell 'em, kiss it off the glass or, pass or, kick it
Callin shots from the bench and, finger pointin picks
I'm Coach Chuck Daly, a/k/a Daddy Rich
I, meant Chuck Ing-ah-lish, the flicker of the flicks
All net, finger roll, Allan Houston off the pick
Yeaaah, the pick, of the litter with the kicks
It's new, we kick too - Who do? The Cool Kids

Pickets in the city when we in around town
Next door neighbors tellin us, that is too loud
"Now neighbor, can you please just turn that mess down?"
This is the sound of throwin pennies on the ground

Twistin off the faucet washin washin spittin while I'm walkin
Then I start thinkin I should hit the sink and get the flossin
Awesome and then I hear the Mrs. barkin
Not my Mrs., Mrs. Wilson from the yard across us
And while I'm flossin my teeth
I see her walkin 'cross that street than I waved
Like, what's up Mrs. W? Sorry 'bout the trouble we've been causin
The cops came over but it wasn't true
They said the music which is way too noisy
She said I know how you boys be
But, if you not busy come over for some lemonade later
I'm a Minute Maid man, made minutes into paper
The vapors, the kid that stayed rude that you will see
Sittin down with some twins now I'm wishin it was two of me
Whenever my sales hit the pavement
I'm 'spoed to arrange in the range meant to bang 'em

Go Girl; Pitbull (feat. Trina and Young Bo$$)

What a small world this of hip hop music. Pitbull had already co-worked with Ying Yang Twins (my last post)¹ and also with Pharrell Williams (my penult post)². He is now (in my today post) co-working with Trina (Katrina Laverne Taylor) and Young Bo$$ (David Rush).
Pitbull, whose real name is Armando Christian Pérez, began his musical career in 2002 performing with Lil Jon. His debut album, M.I.A.M.I, is from 2004, his second album, El Mariel, from 2006 and his third album, The Boatlift, from 2007³. Pitbull released more albums but we are going to stay with this one.

The Boatlift released four singles, one of them is Go Girl, our whistling song. DJBooth.net wrote a gorgeous review about this song:

"Cuban-American hip hop sensation Pitbull is back with his newest sexy ladies’ anthem, Go Girl. Although Mr. 305 trades his usual loud-sounding voice for a near-whisper (as the Ying Yang Twins have done a few times,) his 2 Live Crew influence is obvious, as he boasts about getting all the sexy ladies to the dance floor. With a minimalist-sounding beat (a la Mr. Collipark on Bun B’s Git It) by Milwaukee-based producer Soundz (One Chance‘s Look At Her), as well as guest appearances by the self-proclaimed 'Baddest Bitch' Trina and newcomer Young Boss, look for Go Girl to receive maximum airplay in the clubs and at radio nationwide."

"Go Girl" peaked #83 on U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

What would music be without sound?
I party like a rockstar
Look like a movie star
Play like an all star
Fuck like a pornstar
Baby I'm a superstar
Always posted at the bar
Always with couple boss
Maybe I'm just that that raw
Dawg check your resume
I hit something everyday
Ask about me n' dey say
That chico run MIA
Pitbull and young boss
That's fire
Go girl work it out
'til u tire
Just tryin' to pay your tuition
Liar
My corner is like HBO's wire
So please don't play no games
And baby don't say no names
And we can do this one more again
Next time you can bring your friends
So get your friends
And I get my friends
And we can be friends
do this every weekend

we can hit your place
we can hit my place
she's on my top 8
I bagged her off of myspace

Go girl, go girl, go girl, go girl
Go girl, go girl, go girl, go girl
Shake them dice and roll them
Shake them dice and roll them
When they ask u whats that dance
U say that's the hustle man

Young Boss:
Girl I wanna know your name
Girl who u be?
Don't care with who you came
As long as u leave wit' me
What's you sippin' on?
I buy you a drink
Get u one of them shiny things
Yer Girl pick pink
I see those Jimmy Choos
Those Vera Wangs
I luv the way u work
Girl do your thing

I'm like a star
My click is full of ballas
We at the bar
So go get your friends
And I get my friends
And we can be friends
do this every weekend

we can hit your place
we can hit my place
she's on my top 8
I bagged her off of myspace

Go girl, go girl, go girl, go girl
Go girl, go girl, go girl, go girl
Shake them dice and roll them
Shake them dice and roll them
When they ask u whats that dance
U say that's the hustle man

Trina:
Diamond princess
I make them bus quick
Man I back it up
Like a Mack Truck
(heavy breathing)
Don't talk about it boy
Be about it boy
I got them girls boy
Turn out your girls boy

I'm like a freaky shit
Coz you're my freak
So get your friends
And I get my friends
And we can be friends

[pre-hook:]
we can hit your place

she's on my top 8
I bagged her off of myspace

[Chorus:]
Go girl, go girl, go girl, go girl
Go girl, go girl, go girl, go girl
Shake them dice and roll them
Shake them dice and roll them
When they ask u whats that dance
U say that's the hustle man

Whistle While You Twurk; Ying Yang Twins

TO TWURK: [1] to move your body in a way that you are rubbing up against something or someone. Usually females press or rub their rear close to the males groin area. Males usually move their hips in a pressing motion. Almost like "grinding". [2] to flex booty cheek muscles one at a time or together at the same time so it bounces to the beat of a song while the rest of the body remains relatively still. [3] to twurk is to wank like never wanked before. [And 4] To have sex.

The Ying Yang Twins is an American hip hop duo from Atlanta. To be more exact, they play crunk, a sub-genre in the embracing hip hop style. The duo is formed by Kaine and D-Roc. They started in 1997 and, according to Wikipedia, "Ying Yang Twins debuted in 2000 with the single 'Whistle While You Twurk', which was played on urban and pop radio stations and peaked at #16 on the US R&B/Hip-Hop chart."

In an interview with Off the Chain, they explain:

"Whats behind the name Ying Yang Twins?

Well Basically we are oppsites D-Roc is a party animal while Kaine is the party pooper you just won't know what to expect. Our styles are both different, its nothing alike but balances out together on a track. We have a unique original sound with soul and we go back deep to the old school and want to bring that feeling out."

And what about the YYT's whistling song being a parody (the whistling in the chorus is the same and the very similar names) of Disney's whistling song? Well, I found out on Answers.com that "Their debut sold over 100,000 copies with the help the catchy single 'Whistle While You Twurk.' The group actually received a cease-and-desist order from Disney for copping the Snow White song, but the Ying Yang Twins didn't flinch; they were becoming underground favorites in Atlanta, gaining a rowdy reputation for writing strip club anthems — and visiting them on a regular basis."

See ya, tomorrow!

Here is the band's MySpace.

Wonderful Place; N*E*R*D

Enough indie songs. At least for a while. From today till the end of the week, I am gonna post only rap/hip hop/R&B/funk songs with whistling. So I'm starting with N*E*R*D, an American funk/hip hop trio formed by Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo (as a duo they are The Neptunes) and Shay Haley.¹

N*E*R*D is the acronym for the sentence "No-one Ever Really Dies." It's a funny coincidence to write it today, when everybody is disbelieving the notice of Bin Laden's death.

Anyways, N*E*R*D released four studio albums. One of them, "Fly or Die," from 2004, was listed in the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die." This album has one whistling song.

The name of the song is "Wonderful Place." I found on RainyDawg.org a good review about this song, so I'll paste it here:

"'Wonderful Place' provides a second highlight. The track is split into two, with each half producing a stark contrast in sound and message. The opening four minutes exposes Pharrell as his hazy drugged-out Bobby James persona, except this time around he's not depressed or 'one hit away from being assed out,' but enjoying the pleasures of our natural world and its fuzzy little critters. A dwarfy whistle introduces his euphoric state and later slowly takes the song into completely different territory. The final three minutes features a return to top form on production for Pharrell and Chad. Acoustic guitar, swooping strings, twinkling percussion, and bongo drums create a mesmerizing beat that nearly overshadow Pharrell's lyrics describing a mother saving her baby from drowning during a fishing trip. The slightly bizarre lyrics are a nice retreat from the typical swooning and protesting. The song triumphantly concludes on the heartfelt message of 'Mom, I was waiting for you / Your baby / I love you,' providing a stellar end to an epic song."

So I also read on Song Meanings that this song was written after Pharrell having experienced some hallucinogenic drugs.
Damn, it's setting in now (so high)
Cuz cartoons are turning into real life
Lemons and limes are fighting
Fighting over straws
Like they were oil filled pipes

And why's the sun writing this song
And why is this funny to me
All of a sudden the mouse comes along
And what he sings brings harmony

You may not understand
Why there's a smile on my face
It's cuz this world could be
Such a wonderful place

Cuz some of these companies
Two-thousand began a race ??
But not me man
I see a wonderful place
The world's a wonderful place

My soul's in my smile
Don't frown
Just get up get up

Look at the birds
Look at the bees
Look at the skies
Look at the seas
It's a wonderful place

Look at the planes
Look at the cars
Look at the sun
Look at the stars

The wallpapers moving
My arms and my legs leave
A blur when i swipe
Sap is just oozing
The trees say "smoke blocks the sun"
So for them it's just night

The seven eyes look in thru the clouds
And why is that funny to me
And here comes the mouse singing loud
And what he sings brings harmony

You may not understand
Why there's a smile on my face
It's cuz this world could be

Whistle While You Work; Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Today is International Workers’ Day!

This song is for people who (like me), unfortunately, are working this Holiday...
---

Today we're gonna talk about the most known tune from the movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The lyrics of “Whistle While You Work” were written back in 1937 by Larry Morey and the melody was composed by Frank Churchill;¹ it was sung (and whistled, who knows?) by Adriana Caselotti, then 18 years old. About her, we can read on IMDB.com that “[Walt Disney] was looking for a fresh and natural voice, and asked her father if any of his students might be suitable, but on hearing Adriana's voice realized his search was over.Wikipedia states that her payment for this movie was US$970!

This movie is highly praised by great names of cinema, like Charles Chaplin and Orson Welles. I think the website Rotten Tomatoes explains it very well: “With its involving story and characters, vibrant art, and memorable songs, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs set the animation standard for decades to come.

According to another article from Wikipedia, “[the movie] was the first full-length cel-animated feature in motion picture history, as well as the first animated feature film produced in America, the first produced in full color, the first to be produced by Walt Disney, and the first in the Walt Disney Animated Classics canon.

And this is it. Have a good holiday!

...we only have to wish that the following excerpt of the song is true, “the time will fly so whistle while you work.” Well, according to this article on DailyMail.co.uk, it’s absolutely feasible.

Just whistle while you work
And cheerfully together we can tidy up the place
So hum a merry tune
It won't take long when there's a song to help you set the pace

And as you sweep the room
Imagine that the broom is someone that you love
And soon you'll find you're dancing to the tune

When hearts are high the time will fly so whistle while you work
